Session 2 - Team Motivation

Team Effectiveness

Let's start the session off with a team video clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xevQ2yTyK9Y

What did you think?

AT the end of last week's class, you were given a task to write about a team from a book that you have read and to submit it as a report. I'd like to go around the room and hear a quick summary of the team you selected.

  • The Book you chose
  • The team members
  • How effective was the team?
  • What would you have done differently if you were a team member?

Motivation

What is Motivation?

The business dictionary  http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/motivation.html defines it as:

Internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested and committed to a job, role or subject, or to make an effort to attain a goal.

Motivation results from the interaction of both conscious and unconscious factors such as the (1) intensity of desire or need, (2) incentive or reward value of the goal, and (3) expectations of the individual and of his or her peers. These factors are the reasons one has for behaving a certain way. An example is a student that spends extra time studying for a test because he or she wants a better grade in the class.

Theories

There are a number of theories that try and answer the question "What motivates people?"

The main Motivation Theorists are:

  • John Adair - Maureen
  • Frederick Herzberg - Caroline and Jessica
  • Abraham Maslow - Rachel/Roslyn
  • David Mclelland - Lauren
  • Douglas McGregor - Karen
  • Victor Vroom - Julie

 Activity

Research your theorist and discuss their theory. DO you think they have a valid point?
